Witman Holds Auction For Ned Foltz

Walter And June Gottshall Eagle Carving Brings $1,130

By Karl Pass - June 11, 2021

Witman Auctioneers Inc., in Manheim, Pa., conducted an auction for Ned and the late Gwen Foltz on May 1 at 225 N. Peartown Road, Reinholds, Pa. Luke and Clarke Witman began holding sales for potter and collector Foltz six years ago, and more are on the horizon. Heavy on contemporary folk carvings, especially rabbits and Easter-themed work, the auction contained numerous woodcarvings by Walter and June Gottshall, Dan Strawser, and others and sold well. As always, a selection of Foltz redware was also sold. The following are several items and what they sold for. Prices include a 10 percent buyers premium. As per tradition at these on-site sales, Foltz creates a special one-of-a-kind piece to be sold as the final lot. This incredibly artistic and unique two-piece redware train brought $2,200. A Foltz redware Easter rabbit charger sold for $770, and a Foltz redware bank in the form of a woman, $525. A Foltz rabbit plate realized $330, and a Foltz twisted handle bowl, $300. A Barbara Strawser painting sold for $360, a Jim Murphy paint-decorated wooden wall box was $255, and a large Menno folk art horse went for $255. Dan Strawser carvings have an active following. A rabbit sold for $210, one with a basket in the mouth sold for $245, and a pair of rabbits sold for $220. Walter and June Gottshall carvings also have a base of collectors active in todays market. A spread-wing eagle realized $1,130; a rabbit, $470; a pig, $320; and an owl wall box, $300. Another Gottshall rabbit sold for $275 and a peacock brought $290. There will be another sale scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 21. To contact Witman Auctioneers, call 717-665-5735.
