Witman Holds A Sale For Ned Foltz
Foltz Redware Nativity Scene Sells For $880
June 17, 2022
Witman Auctioneers Inc., of Manheim, Pa, held an on-site auction for Ned and the late Gwen Foltz at Foltzs studio located in rural northern Lancaster County at 225 North Peartown Road in Reinholds on May 14. Foltz, a redware potter and former schoolteacher, is among the most talented potters of his generation. Working in the Pennsylvania German tradition, he is known especially for his figural work, which places him in a class above. Luke and Clarke Witman have had over a dozen sales for Foltz over the years in a downsizing effort. Ned and his late wife, Gwen, collected contemporary folk art. The following were prices realized, which include a 10-percent buyers premium. A finely done redware airplane hand-modeled by Foltz as a special piece to be sold at the sale brought $2,200. A Foltz redware nativity set scene sold for $880; a Foltz turkey plate, $606; and a Foltz log cabin bank, $578. A Foltz Santa sold for $303, and a Foltz pumpkin, $385. A Walter and June Gottshall (WJG) carved and painted chicken on nest brought $440. A WJG chicken on top of a jar sold for $341, and a WJG carved bird, $286. A Menno folk art pig sold for $253. An Esther Dierwechter wooden carved Schimmel-style rooster realized $231, and Don Noyes birds sold for $209. The next auction on behalf of Foltz is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10.
