Despite being shut down prior to their scheduled annual Pre-Christmas Auction in December, Roan Inc. pushed through and instead presented a post Pre-Christmas Auction on Jan. 8 and 9 at its auction gallery in Cogan Station, Pa. Nervous about the impact this decision might have on their consignors and if their buyers would still show interest, the Roan family felt it best to hold off until Jan. 8 and 9, and the decision proved to be worthwhile. Offering a wide variety of antiques and collectibles across two days of in-house and online bidding, the auction house drew in worldwide interest, with many items finding new homes across the country. Day ones session offered a quality selection of gold jewelry and sterling wares that produced strong results. Some items of interest include two vintage 14-carat charm bracelets selling for $2,600 and $1,700 each, a 14-carat $5 U.S. Gold coin bracelet and earring set for $1,800, ladies wristwatches such as a 14-carat Baronet Deco cocktail watch for $1,550 and a 14-carat Omega for $825, an unmarked gold Tiffany & Co. opal and diamond brooch for $450 and even a frame of (39) vintage costume designer brooches for $550, along with many other pieces and lots of jewelry. The sterling wares were also of interest, with a six-piece coffee service drawing the most attention to the sum of $2,100 and a cased service for (12) of Reed & Barton Francis I flatware for $2,000. Also offered amongst the jewelry and few other ladies items was a vintage Valentino for TWA wool ladys coat from a local estate, drawing mostly local interest, realizing $275. Antique and vintage Christmas collectibles and decor were strong contenders in the auction. Items varied from an individual cast-iron Santa bank to tray lots of celluloid and paper mache German candy containers, with prices ranging from $90 to $475. Although the first session offered a modest mix of antiques and furniture as well, day two consisted of a wider variety of antiques, primitives, artworks, and furnishings. A pair of original watercolors by former local artist Annie Snyder realized $3,600, while a work by another local artist, David Armstrong, sold for $2,200. Another art highlight was a collection of (4) J. Wesley Little watercolors that sold for a combined total of $2,850. A nickel finish National Cash Register from the Sherman House Hotel, Shippensburg, Pa., is now heading out West and realized $1,050. Cast-iron wares by Griswold and Erie did well. A #13 skillet topped out at $1,600, (2) #12 skillets sold for $425 and $350 each, a partial nest of skillets went for $800, while the smallest of the bunch, a #2, captured $600. Other antiques and collectibles that drew considerable attention were a colorful vintage Kelly Tubes and Tires tin litho sign, which sold for $825; a vintage Schwinn Century bicycle for $475; a few rare size Williamsport stoneware pieces went to new homes after bringing in $1,550 for a Sipe, Nichols & Co. four-gallon jug; while a Moore Nichols & Co. three-gallon jug realized $500. An array of furniture was offered over the two-day span, but as recent history shows, the interest and price level in furniture sales has dropped considerably compared to years ago, yet some pieces did do well, bringing in respectable prices. This first winter auction showcased a period Chinese Chippendale side chair that sold to a phone bidder for $3,960. Prices reported do not include buyers premium. With Covid and the pandemic changing the way business is handled, Roan Inc. is looking forward to offering more online bidding participation options at its auctions.
