Magic: The Gathering Collection Brings Over $600,000
Joe Bodnar Sold Collection In Feb. 18 Auction
March 19, 2021
On Feb. 18, Bodnars Auction sold 414 lots of a single-owner estate collection of Magic The Gathering cards for just over $600,000, making it one of the highest grossing single owner collections in Bodnars 29 years of conducting auctions. When the collection came into the auction firm, Bodnars knew it had great potential and is thrilled it exceeded the $200,000-$400,000 pre-auction estimate. The company sent the majority of the collection to Beckett grading based in Dallas, Texas, to have them slabbed and graded. An armored car service was used to transport the cards to Texas from New Jersey and back. Some of the winning lots were delivered this way as well. This collection featured complete sets of the game from the Alpha and Beta sets as well as the first 10 years of production. Among the highlights of the sale was a Black Lotus R A, Alpha Set 1993, Beckett graded 7.5 Near Mint+ centering 9, edges 8, corners 7 and surface 9, serial #0012507975, selling for an impressive $64,900. Two other graded Black Lotus cards with lower grades sold for $41,300 and $25,960. Complete sets sold well, with a 7th Edition Foil Set, 2001 (350 cards), selling for $10,620. An Urzas Destiny, 1999, complete set sold for $5,310, and an Urzas Legacy Foil complete set, 1999, sold for $5,605. All 414 lots sold close to the high estimate or above. All lots were offered online only with a live broadcast of the sale on liveauctioneers. Bodnars Auction conducts online auctions every other week handling estate collections of antiques, collectibles, toys, comics, die-cast, Star Wars and related collectibles, sports items and other pop cultural items out of South Brunswick, N.J.
