Large Collection Of 19th-Century Qing Dynasty Jade To Be Sold At Cordier Auctions

Online Catalog Sale Will Be Held Sept. 7

September 01, 2023

In a Fine and Decorative Arts Sale to be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, Cordier Auctions will be offering a large collection of Qing Dynasty jade seldom seen at auction. This collection of jade belonged to George Henne (1866-1938) and was inherited by his family. Henne used the jade to decorate his handmade Chinese silk valuables storage boxes, frames, and other collectibles. Jade and related Chinese antiques were imported by Henne of 311 E. 23rd Street, New York, N.Y., from approximately 1900 to 1935. The jade includes belt hooks, pendants, and hair decorations. The jade was crafted in China during the 1800s and earlier. The Qing Dynasty, a Manchu-led dynasty and the last imperial dynasty in China, covers the period from 1636 to 1912. Every piece is intricately carved and ornately designed. Designs include dragons (heads and full-body), fu bats, gourds, lingzhi mushrooms, praying mantis, fruit, flowers, Buddha, Confucius, and others. One example of the intricate carving and design is lot 172, a gilt bronze and celadon jade belt buckle (illustrated) with a carved design depicting a dragon with flowers. The estimate will be $3,000-$5,000. The auction will also include fine art, fine furnishings, sterling, fine jewelry, and collectibles. Additional highlights include John White Alexanders (1865-1916) An Idle Moment (est. $60,000-$80,000); a 129-piece Reed and Barton Marlborough Sterling flatware service (est. $1,800-$2,000); a 1999 Rolex Submariner Date Model 16610 watch with original papers (est. $5,000-$7,000); and a 14-carat gold and 1.7-carat diamond solitaire ring (est. $5,000-$7,000). Bidding for the auction is now open online via LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable. Previews are available by appointment by contacting Cordier Auctions in Harrisburg, Pa. For additional information, call 717-731-8662.
