October 16, 2020
Conestoga Auction Co., a division of the Hess Auction Group in Manheim, Pa., will hold a multi-consignor sale on Saturday, Oct. 31. This sale is highlighted by many items from the Eugene and Vera Charles collection, all to be sold unreserved. Both Eugene (Gene) and Vera were from Lancaster County, Pa. The couple put together a stellar regional Pennsylvania folk art collection over many decades during the long ago era when farm sales were the norm every Saturday. Gene graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1950 with a bachelors degree in chemistry. He worked for Wyeth Laboratories in Marietta for 37 years. He was a supervisor of the Analytical Chemistry Lab, retiring in 1987. The couple were respected dealers, exhibiting at regional shows, and specialized in china. The Charleses were always willing to host guests and share their knowledge of what they had. Gene always said when collecting, Make sure its right, and youll never have to make an excuse for it. They were taught by their mentors that condition isnt the only thing, its everything. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2016. Vera passed away in January of 2017. Currently in his 90s, Gene is living in Mountville. Items to be sold include spatterware, Gaudy Dutch, and Early Adams Rose china, early glass, wood carvings, signed iron, exceptional Lehnware, country furniture, and more. Another consignment comes from Dr. Edward and Nora Pohl, also of Lancaster, Pa., and consists of a quality collection of silver. The Pohl collection will be unreserved and includes many pieces by J.R. Horner. J.R. Horner currently resides and works as a silversmith in Valley Forge, Pa. After being stationed in Germany, he chose to return to Nuremburg, Germany, to be trained as a professional silversmith. Upon returning to the states, he worked with J.E. Caldwell & Co. before setting off on his own. Many of the pieces offered in this sale were designed and custom made by Horner for Nora Pohl. The photos represent a select number of lots from the Charles collection. Conestoga Auction Co. is located at 768 Graystone Road, Manheim, Pa. A preview will be held on Friday, Oct. 30, from noon to 6 p.m. The sale will begin at 9 a.m. (EST) on Saturday, Oct. 31. There is an 18-percent buyers premium for in-house bidders.
