March 12, 2021
As the old adage says, Records are meant to be broken, and Heritage Auctions is proving it once again. For the third consecutive week, they broke the world record for the largest weekly comics auction during the titled Sunday and Monday Comics, Animation, Video Games and Art Weekly Online Auction that closed Feb. 15 on HA.com after reaching $694,430 in total sales. The event, which included 1,147 lots and drew 3,021 bidders over two days, erased the previous standard of $672,569, which was set last week. The market is beyond robust. Im so pleased our consignors are doing well and our buyers continue to add important pieces to their collections, Heritage Auctions Senior Vice President Ed Jaster said. Only three weeks ago, we had our first $600,000 weekly sale. Only to beat that record the next week and again the week after. It wont be long before our first $700,000 weekly sale. As is often the case, the top lot in the auction was Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962), CGC Apparent VG 4.0 Slight/Moderate (C-2) off-white to white pages. Nearly two dozen bids boosted the result to $19,200 for the top-ranked issue on Overstreets list of Top 50 Silver Age Comics, which features the origin and first appearance of Spider-Man, as well as the first appearances of key supporting characters like Uncle Ben and Aunt May. The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962), CGC VG- 3.5 white pages, prompted even more activity, riding 28 bids to a closing total of $14,400. The issue includes the origin and first appearance of the Hulk, who is depicted in his original grey color instead of his more familiar green, as well as the first appearances of key supporting characters, including Rick Jones, Betty Ross and Thunderbolt Ross. With a cover and art by Jack Kirby, the issue is ranked No. 2 on Overstreets list of Top 50 Silver Age Comics. Demand for original art continues to fuel active bidding in Heritage Auctions weekly auctions. Malcolm Smith Imagination Science Fiction cover original art (Greenleaf Publishing, 1956) drew 25 bids before closing at $9,600. The cover illustration depicts a spaceship fire fight for the Edmond Hamilton (as Alexander Blade) Battle for the Stars story. The surge in popularity of video games continued with Super Mario Bros., Wata 6.5 B+ Sealed Oval SOQ TM, Later Production, NES Nintendo 1985 USA, the Nintendo Entertainment System black box launch title and first video game in the Super Mario Bros. series, selling for $8,100. The game with the first appearance of Bowser is the highest-selling NES game of all time.
