A 50-Year Pennsylvania Collection Of Militaria Comes To Auction
Pook & Pook To Hold Sale On March 26

On Friday, March 26, starting at 10 a.m., Pook & Pook Inc. will offer up a lifelong collection of militaria from the estate of a Pennsylvania gentleman. This online-only sale includes almost 700 lots of ephemera, pistols, shotguns, revolvers, swords, knives, and a vast assortment of military uniforms and medals. The auction, with bidding on both Bidsquare.com and Proxibid.com, represents a 50-year-plus journey of collecting militaria and sporting items. While the collectors main focus was World War II, with many German military highlights, there is quite a bit of material from the 1800s up through World War I. The earlier material includes a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania John Miles 1797 contract musket, a percussion long musket, the lock inscribed James (Brown) & Son, a U.S. model 1863 contract musket by Bridesburg, a Springfield 1873 trapdoor, a U.S. Springfield model 1863 percussion, a U.S.. Springfield model 1884 saddle ring trapdoor carbine, and a Smith Patent by Poultney & Trimble Civil War saddle ring carbine, as well as many others. World War I is represented throughout with many firearms, including several U.S. Springfield Armory model 1898 Krags, a German Mauser model K-98, a Springfield model 1903 bolt action rifle, a U.S. Springfield Armory model 1903 Mark I bolt action rifle, a Remington model 1903-A3 bolt action rifle, and many military rifles such as a Swiss Vetterli, a French Berthier, a Mosin Nagant, a Mauser model 1871/84, a Swedish Carl Gustafs model 1896, a U.S. Springfield model 1896 Krag, a U.S. model 1917 Winchester bolt action rifle, and a German Brunn Mauser model K98, to highlight just a few. Several other WWI items of interest include a U.S. 1918 L. F. & C. Mark I brass handled trench knife and sheath, a German leather Picklehaube helmet, a German M16 camouflage helmet, and a German trench knife and scabbard. The vast majority of the collection is focused on WWII. Some of the rifles set to cross the auction block are a SMLE No. 5 mark I bolt action Jungle carbine, two Inland Mfg. General Motors U.S. M1 semi-automatic carbines, many Italian Carcano rifles, several Japanese Arisaka rifles, which include a Japanese Arisaka type 97 bolt action Snipers rifle, an Egyptian Hakim semi-automatic rifle, and many, many more. This collection is permeated with WWII military accessories, uniforms, insignias, medals, and accoutrements. Uniforms are represented by U.S. examples, as well as several scarce German specimens and some Japanese material. Some of the items to be discovered are a German WWII Luftwaffe visor cap, Hermann Goring division, an untouched German WWII M40 Heer decal helmet, a German WWII Luftwaffe netzkopfhaube summer issue flying helmet, a German WWII blue Hitler youth uniform, a Japanese WWII era heated flight overalls, a German WWII four pocket HBT combat tunic, NCO, a German WWII Service Red Cross jacket, a German WWII Kreigsmarine blue Navy jacket, a German WWII Kreigsmarine summer work shirt, a German WWII Luftwaffe wool jacket, and a German WWII Luftwaffe Flieger blouse, as well as several U.S. jackets, shirts, helmets and associated items. Not to be overlooked is a massive number of military medals, badges and patches, including a scarce German WWII Feldgendarmerie Gorget, a group of German WWII small flags, a German WWII submarine badge, a German WWII Iron Cross first class, a German WWII bronze Close Combat, a German WWII silver Panzer Assault badge, a very rare German Luftwaffe Pilot badge bullion, and many USAF badges, medals, etc. Finishing out the auction is a massive collection of Pennsylvania hunting and fishing licenses. The fishing badges start with a 1922 first issue paper, and the hunting group starts with 1913. A large majority of the licenses are Clinton County. There are hundreds of licenses of all types. Finishing the auction off is a large wrought-iron bear trap.
